How Decodable Comics Build Reading Fluency (and Keep Kids Engaged)
A step-by-step routine to move students from decoding to fluent, expressive reading
If your students can sound out words but still read in a choppy, word-by-word way…
You’re not alone.
This is one of the most common gaps teachers see:
👉 Students can decode
…but they don’t sound like readers yet
Fluency doesn’t automatically happen after decoding.
It has to be built through structured, repeated, meaningful practice.
In a Science of Reading classroom, that means:
- Controlled text
- Multiple reads
- Purposeful follow-up
That’s exactly where decodable comics come in.
Below is a step-by-step routine you can use in your classroom.

Decodable Comics Routine
Learning Objective
Students will build fluency by rereading decodable text, recognizing phonics patterns, and applying those skills through writing and comprehension.
Materials Needed
Here are the materials you will need for this activity:
- Decodable comic (aligned to a phonics skill)
- Word work page (phonics focus words)
- Sentence writing page
- Comprehension or response page
Optional:
- Crayons or highlighters
- Pencil
What Is a Decodable Comics Routine?
A decodable comics routine is a structured fluency activity where students:
- Read controlled text multiple times
- Practice a targeted phonics skill
- Apply learning through writing and comprehension
Instead of isolated fluency practice, students move through a connected sequence that strengthens decoding, fluency, and understanding together.

Decodable Comics Routine Procedure
Step 1: First Read – Decode the Comic
Students:
- Read each speech bubble
- Focus on accuracy
- Work through each word using their sounds
Teacher prompt:
👉 “Use your sounds to read each word.”
Students color their first star after reading.
Step 2: Second Read – Build Fluency
Students:
- Reread the comic
- Focus on smoother reading
- Begin recognizing repeated words
Teacher prompt:
👉 “Let’s read it again and make it sound smooth.”
Students color their second star.

Step 3: Third Read – Add Expression
Students:
- Reread the comic
- Read like the character
- Use expression and phrasing
Teacher prompt:
👉 “Read it like the character would say it.”
Students color their third star.

Step 4: Focus on the Phonics Skill
Students:
- Identify words that match the phonics skill (ex: short a)
- Color or highlight those words
Teacher prompt:
👉 “Find the words with our sound.”
Step 5: Apply Through Sentence Writing
Students:
- Use words from the comic or word list
- Write a sentence
Teacher prompt:
👉 “Use one of these words in your own sentence.”
Step 6: Check for Understanding
Students:
- Answer a question about the text or
- Draw a response
Teacher prompt:
👉 “What happened in the story?”
Why This Routine Works
This routine follows a structured literacy progression.
Students are:
- Practicing accurate decoding
- Repeatedly reading connected text
- Recognizing phonics patterns
- Building fluency through repetition
- Applying skills through writing and comprehension
Instead of just rereading, students are moving through a purposeful sequence of practice.

Tips for Using This Routine in the Classroom
This routine works well in a variety of settings.
Whole Group
Model the routine and complete each step together.
Small Group
Use comics targeted to specific phonics skills students need.
Intervention
Slow down each read and provide support with blending and phrasing.
Centers or Independent Work
Students can complete each step independently once they know the routine.
Final Thoughts
Fluency is not built through speed.
It is built through:
- Accurate decoding
- Repeated reading
- Meaningful practice
When students:
- Read the same text multiple times
- Focus on a phonics skill
- Apply their learning
That’s when fluency starts to develop.
Decodable comics make this process structured, engaging, and effective.
